Press Release: Bridges of Lake Lanier - Release of the sixth
print in the series
"Flowery Branch / McEver Road Bridge"
Anne
Brodie Hill announces the release of her latest in a series, of Lake
Lanier Bridges signed prints "Flowery Branch / McEver Road
Bridge." The new print, which is the sixth in the series, shows
the bridge on McEver Road, over Flowery Branch Creek. This is also
the entrance to Starboard Marina and the well-known Up the Creek
Restaurant, famous for its fried Grouper sandwiches.
The view of the bridge, in the print, is from the
water, after passing under the bridge and looking back. It is late
in the afternoon, in early summer, and a young father is fishing,
while his son explores the rocks near the bridge. A female Mallard
is paddling across the water with her five ducklings staying close
behind.
Flowery Branch / McEver Road Bridge is dated 1961,
and is on McEver Road between Gaines Ferry Road and Lights Ferry
Road. In 1964, the Hall County Commission named McEver Road for
Hubert H. McEver, a successful businessman, civic leader and
philanthropist of Hall County.
According to David Coughlin’s Lake Sidney
Lanier, A Storybook Site, page 175,
"On the pre-lake map Highways 400, Interstate
985, and McEver Road did not even exist as shown on the present map.
Hall County sued the government in later years claiming that
highways lost to the reservoir had not been adequately replaced. The
1.7 million won in federal court as compensation for the loss of
roads helped pay for McEver Road’s initial construction, which is
simply an extension of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard."
